KANGAROO PAWS:
Anigozanthos "Big Red"
Red
Winter - Spring bloomer; L & C;
Tall bright red stems can reach 6 ft.
An evergreen perennial with fuzzy rich red flowers that look like claws that rise high above the iris-like foliage from spring through fall (nearly year round along coast). Grows 4-6 feet tall and 2-3 feet wide. Plant in a sunny and open position in the garden in well drained soils. Irrigate regularly and fertilize in spring (not heavily and keep Phosphorus on the low side). Fans only flower once and need to be cleaned out after the flowering period so remove the old leaves down to as low as possible at the end of a season. Care should be exercised that the new emerging fans are not damaged. Hardy and evergreen to about 25 degrees F and will re-sprout after being knocked down by temperatures as low as 20° F. 'Big Red' has the largest flowers of the red cultivars that we grow. This triploid hybrid between (A. manglesii x A. flavidus tetraploid) x (A. rufus x A. flavidus tetraploid) was created by Keith Oliver, at Lakkari Native Plant Nursery in Western Australia and first registered in 1983. It exhibits good disease resistance. Attracts hummingbirds.
Anigozanthos "Blood Red"
Burgundy Red
Spring bloomer; L & C; Tall stems can reach 6 ft.
Anigozanthos "Bush Dawn"
Yellow
Spring bloomer; L & C; 2-3 ft. tall stems.
This evergreen perennial forms clumps to 1 to 2 feet wide with bright green strapped shaped leaves to 2 to 3 feet tall. From spring until fall ( (nearly year round along coast) emerge the bright yellow tubular flower buds that flare open at tips like a paw. The flowers are held on branching 5 to 6 foot tall stems that are covered with downy yellow hairs. Plant in a sunny and open position in the garden in well drained soils. Irrigate regularly and fertilize in spring (not heavily and keep (P) phosphorus on the low side). Fans only flower once and need to be cleaned out after the flowering period so remove the old leaves down to as low as possible at the end of a season. Care should be exercised that the new emerging fans are not damaged. Hardy to about 25-30 degrees F. We have been growing this beautiful yellow cultivar since 1985. It was hybridized by the late Merv Turner who bred his plants to be ink spot resistant. Attracts hummingbirds
Anigozanthos "Bush Ember"
Red orange
Spring bloomer; L & C;
Dwarf plant with 18 in. stem length.
This is a great cut flower. It holds the flowers both on and off the bush for a long time and they have a very distinctive look. The bush series of Anigozanthos are all dwarf plants with flowers at a height of 18" to two feet. The species plants can be more than 4 feet tall.
Anigozanthos "Bush Pearl"
Pink
Spring bloomer; L & C;
Dwarf plant with 18 in. stem length. 2 Gal. Pot.
Anigozanthos "Bush Tango"
Orange
Spring bloomer; L & C; 24 in.
stem length with big head; New hybrid for 2005!
This midsized kangaroo paw has foliage to 2 feet tall with lightly branched 3 foot flower stems bearing masses of orange irridescent flowers throughout spring and summer and sporadically the rest of the year. Plant in a sunny and open position in the garden in moderately well drained soils (this cultivar more tolerant to heavier soils). 'Bush Tango' is a great garden plant and nice for flower arrangements. It is a a complex hybrid created by hybridizer Angus Stewart. This plant does suffer from a rust disease in Australia but this problem has not been observed here in California.
